En Uruguay los tréboles se inoculan desde 1967 con Rhizobium leguminosarum sv. trifolii cepa U204, introducida de EEUU. Si bien
Uruguay es reconocido por su política de inoculación de leguminosas, los productores disminuyeron esta práctica en tréboles porque no siempre observan beneficios derivados. Esto se debe a que en algunos suelos hay poblaciones de rizobios nativos-naturalizados
eficientes, que constituyen un recurso genético para desarrollar inoculantes competitivos y persistentes. Con este fin se colectaron
cepas de diferentes de suelos de Uruguay y se seleccionaron por su eficiencia. Entre las cepas eficientes se seleccionaron en condiciones controladas las competitivas mediante marcaje con el gen gusA, en distintos suelos “objetivo”. Las cepas competitivas y eficientes se evaluaron en campo según la producción de biomasa, nitrógeno fijado (enriquecimiento de 15N), ocupación de nódulos y persistencia (ERIC-PCR). Con esta estrategia seleccionamos tres cepas, entre ellas la 317 que mostró, además de habilidad industrial adecuada, mayor ocupación de nódulos de raíces estolones. Esta característica interesa porque la persistencia de trébol depende de la propagación vegetativa, y son los rizobios del suelo, no siempre eficientes y a veces parásitos, quienes fijan nitrógeno en las nuevas plantas. Las relaciones filogenéticas entre estos rizobios y los aislados del trébol nativo Trifolium polymorphum se establecieron mediante análisis de secuencias ITS, genes 16SRNA, atpD, glnII, recA, rpoB y de los genes simbióticos nodA, nodC y nifH. Así identificamos: i) cepas nativas ineficientes en trébol blanco aisladas de T. polymorphum que no evidencian intercambio genético con las otras evaluadas, ii) cepas nativas eficientes en trébol blanco como 317, que adquirieron genes simbióticos del inoculante comercial pero con genes housekeeping diferentes de este y iii) una cepa naturalizada derivada del inoculante comercial. Estos rizobios nativos o naturalizados son buenos candidatos para una segunda generación de inoculantes de trébol para Uruguay. Abstract:
Potential consequences of climate change on crop production can be studied using mechanistic crop simulation models. While a broad variety of maize simulation models exist, it is not known whether different models diverge on grain yield responses to changes in climatic factors, or whether they agree in their general trends related to phenology, growth, and yield. With the goal of analyzing the sensitivity of simulated yields to changes in temperature and atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations [CO2], we present the largest maize crop model intercomparison to date, including 23 different models. These models were evaluated for four locations representing a wide range of maize production conditions in the world: Lusignan (France), Ames (USA), Rio Verde (Brazil) and Morogoro (Tanzania).
While individual models differed considerably in absolute yield simulation at the four sites, an ensemble of a minimum number of models was able to simulate absolute yields accurately at the four sites even with low data forcalibration, thus suggesting that using an ensemble of models has merit. Temperature increase had strong negative influence on modeled yield response of roughly 0.5 Mg ha1 per °C. Doubling [CO2] from 360 to 720 lmol mol1 increased grain yield by 7.5% on average across models and the sites. That would therefore make temperature the main factor altering maize yields at the end of this century. Furthermore, there was a large uncertainty in the yield response to [CO2] among models.
